Samsung Galaxy S6 Price Drop

Samsung Galaxy S6 Price Drop

The company added that its bottom line suffered in part due to marketing expenses related to the new launches.
"Despite the launch of Galaxy S6, improvement to earnings was quite marginal due to low smartphone shipments and an increase in marketing expenses for new product launches," Samsung said in a company statement. The company later added that it will be 'adjusting' the price of its flagship smartphones to help shore up sales.
"The Mobile Business plans to firmly maintain its sale of premium smartphones by flexibly adjusting the price of the Galaxy S6  and Galaxy S6 Edge, and launching a new model with a larger screen," the statement added, in a not so subtle hint that price cuts for both phones are incoming. The "new model with a larger screen" being talked about could be the Galaxy Note 5 or the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus that are expected to launch next month.

Xiaomi Mi 4i 32GB Variant Could Launch in India on Wednesday

Xiaomi Mi 4i 32GB Variant Could Launch in India on Wednesday

Xiaomi, which in April this year launched the 16GB Mi 4i smartphone in India at Rs. 12,999, now seems ready to introduce its 32GB variant.
The Chinese smartphone maker on Monday posted an image to Facebook showing a cryptic message made out of matchsticks reading "16", followed by a text stating, "Move 4 to double". From the teaser it is likely that the company will launch the 32GB storage variant of the Mi 4i. The price however, remains a mystery. The launch of 32GBXiaomi Mi 4i would also go in line with company's Vice President Hugo Barra's previous statement of bumping the inbuilt storage limit of the Mi 4i. The launch of the product comes as Xiaomi celebrates its one year in the Indian market on July 22.
Needless to say, the hike in the inbuilt storage of the handset would give users much more space to store media content and other files or documents in the handset. The current 16GB Mi 4i model does not support a microSD card slot and leaves only 13GB accessible by users. Xiaomi Mi 4i was criticised for its lack of microSD slot at launch, something with Barra defended.

Cortana Coming to India

Cortana Coming to India

A full-fledged version of Cortana is coming to India. Microsoft announced on Monday that it plans to bring the digital voice assistant to India, as well as Japan, Canada, and Australia in the coming months. As part of the expansion, Cortana will also become available in Brazil and Mexico later this year.

Despite being initially launched only in the US and UK, India has always been one of Cortana's largest consumer base. Last year, plenty of users enabled Cortana in the country via a workaround. Overwhelmed by the requests and attention, the company launched an alpha version of Cortana in India last year. The version; however, didn't come equipped with all the feature.

Announced as a flagship feature of Windows Phone 8.1 last year, Cortana is Microsoft's take on Apple's Siri, and Google's Google Now assistants. The voice assistant has been lauded with praises from users and critics alike; however, its limited availability has kept users in queue for long.

Microsoft says it is taking its time to get the local dialects, idioms and speech patterns right before making it available in different regions. "In each market, we focus in on certain key attributes that help us find the right voice talent for Cortana,"says Marcus Ash, head of Cortana team at Microsoft.

Lumia Devices Getting Update That Enables 4G Connectivity

Lumia Devices Getting Update That Enables 4G Connectivity

Microsoft India has reportedly started rolling out an OTA (over-the-air) update for select Lumia handsets that enables 4G connectivity option on these devices.
According to a report by WM Poweruser, Microsoft is rolling out an update for the Lumia 1520, Lumia 1320, Lumia 930, Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 830, and Lumia 625 smartphones. After receiving the OTA update, smartphone users will get another mobile data setting for 4G, apart from 2G (GSM) and 3G (WCDMA) settings that existed already.
The report however claims that the due to hardware limitation, these handsets will only support FDD-LTE (1800 MHz) band and not TDD-LTE (2300MHz) that's used by Airtel for its 4G network. The update doesn't seem to bring any other new features.
The report citing a Microsoft India executive suggested the company's plan to launch top-end smartphones running Windows 10 Mobile this year. To recall, Microsoft India this year has mainly focused on budget segment in the country. The company primarily launched sub-Rs. 10,000 smartphones in the Indian market in an attempt to aggressively strengthen its budget offerings.

Windows 10 Will Be Made Available on USB Flash Drives

Windows 10 Will Be Made Available on USB Flash Drives

Microsoft on Thursday confirmed that its upcoming Windows 10 operating system will be available on USB drives soon after a couple of Amazon listings claiming to sell Windows 10 versions on USB drives were spotted.
Amazon.com started taking pre-orders for Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro on USB flash drives at $119.99 (approximately Rs. 7,600) and $199.99 (approximately Rs. 12,700). Notably, the retailer listed Microsoft as the seller of the USB flash drives with Windows 10.
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the plans to sell Windows 10 on USB sticks, not requiring users to utilise a DVD drive or create bootable flash drives themselves. In a statement to VentureBeat, a Microsoft spokesperson said, "Windows 10 will be available on USB drives for purchase in retail channels shortly after launch. The suggested retail prices for Windows 10 in the US are the same as Windows 8.1."
The company also confirmed that Windows 10 on USB drives will be available via other retailer stores including Microsoft Store.
Microsoft's confirmation of Windows 10 sold in USB Flash Drives follows a report from last month that claimed the company was planning to sell its Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro SKUs in retail stores via USB flash drives.
Earlier this week, Microsoft started rolling out Windows 10 Build 10240, which was said to be the RTM (release to manufacturing) build, to Windows 10 Insiders. It was said that the Build 10240 was the final RTM copy, which would be available to OEM partners to preload their new machines.

If you are Google Chrome user, you can install an add-on or you can click here to directly access the “Map My Contacts” web app in any other browser.

Once you have authorized and granted access, the app will run for a few minutes, depending on how big your address book is, and generates a Google Mapembedded in an HTML file. A KML file is also created in your Google Drive with markers (or placemarks) for every contact and you can double-click to open this file inside Google Earth.
Also, if you are not using Google Contacts as your primary address book, you can still use the apps to map your contacts. Just export the contacts data from your existing address book (like Outlook or Yahoo Mail) as a CSV file, import the file into Google Contacts and run the app again.

Samsung Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7

Samsung Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7

The smartphones, which have been available in China since last month, fit into the mid-range segment based on their low prices, but offer impressive specifications and features. While the smaller Samsung Galaxy J5 is priced at Rs. 11,999, its larger sibling, the Galaxy J7, will set you back by Rs. 14,999. Both are Flipkart exclusives for now and are available to pre-order, but will ship on July 24. The two new phones are also positioned by Samsung as affordable devices for gamers as they can potentially deliver smooth online gaming experiences using 4G LTE connectivity.
Talking about 4G LTE, which is still being tested in some places and is yet to reach many others, Samsung has not only partnered with Flipkart for as an exclusive retailer, but has also teamed-up with Airtel. As a part of the collaboration, Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 users would receive double Airtel 4G LTE data along with unlimited music downloads worth Rs. 549 for six months using the Wynk Music app. Early buyers can also grab the flip wallet cover worth Rs. 999 for Rs. 199. The company has also collaborated with the popular video game company Gameloft to offer Rs. 3,200 worth of in-game credits for Galaxy J users.
The two new Samsung smartphones both run Android 5.1.1 but have a few differences. The Samsung Galaxy J5 features a 5-inch Super Amoled HD display; a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 SoC; 1.5GB of RAM; 8GB of built-in storage; a 13-megapixel rear autofocus camera; a 5-megapixel front camera, and a 2,600mAh battery. As for theSamsung Galaxy J7, it features a 5.5-inch screen; 16GB of inbuilt storage, a 1.5GHz octa-core Exynos 7580 SoC, and a 3,000mAh battery. Both handsets' inbuilt storage can be expanded via microSD card (up to 128GB).
The use of HD (720x1280-pixel) resolution screens was pretty much expected from Samsung. Both, the 5-inch screen of the Galaxy J5 and the 5.5-inch screen of the Galaxy J7 looked saturated and more vibrant than the screens of smartphones from other brands in the same segment. While the processors in the two models are different, the end users will probably not perceive any difference between the two while using the phones.

Windows 10 'Final' Build 10240 Now Available

Windows 10 'Final' Build 10240 Now Available

Microsoft, as expected, has started rolling out Windows 10 Build 10240, which is said to be the RTM (release to manufacturing) build, to Windows 10 Insiders.
The company was expected to finalise the Windows 10 build, bringing it to the RTM stage last week ahead of its official July 29 release. Now, The Verge citing people familiar with Microsoft's plan reports that the Build 10240 is the final RTM copy, which will be available to OEM partners to preload their new machines.
The report adds that Microsoft on Wednesday was internally signing off the build and might announce the RTM build by the end of this week. However, it also speculates that the company may "choose to ignore the milestone and focus on the launch."

Microsoft has already clarified that Windows 10 operating system would be hitting the market on July 29; though everyone won't be able download the new OS on that date. This will also mean that new machines with Windows 10 will be available to buy only after a few weeks from the July 29 release date.
Tom Warren from The Verge also points out that Microsoft has smartly gone with the final Build 10240 name, as the number signifies Windows 10 operating system. Considering that 1024 kilobytes make 1 megabyte, Build 10240 refers to 10, with 10240 kilobytes signifying 10 megabytes.
In separate news, Microsoft's Gabriel Aul confirmed that Surface RT tablets along with other devices running Windows RT will get an update in September. He said in a tweet, "Windows 8.1 RT Update 3 will be available in September."

OnePlus Cardboard VR Headset India Launch for Rs.99

OnePlus Cardboard VR Headset India Launch for Rs.99

OnePlus India, after revealing the pricing of the Cardboard, has now announced that the virtual reality (VR) headset will be available in India starting Friday. The OnePlus Cardboard will be available exclusively via Amazon India, much like other OnePlus products.
Earlier this month, the company announced that the Cardboard virtual reality (VR) headset would be available in India at Rs. 99 via Amazon India (shipping charges excluding) starting the third week of July.
OnePlus 2 would be compact in size as compared to OnePlus One. It was not yet clear whether the display size had also been tailored accordingly, or is the same 5.5-inch that had been tipped in the recent past. The smartphone would pack a 3300mAh battery, as compared to OnePlus One's 3100mAh.
To recall, OnePlus Cardboard has been tailored perfectly to fit the One smartphone and can be easily assembled. The OnePlus Cardboard meets Cardboard 2.0 features alongside featuring few more improvements. The Cardboard package despite being 20 percent smaller than Google's Cardboard offers the same amazing visual experience. The OnePlus Cardboard has been designed for the OnePlus One; though it is compatible with devices up to 6 inches in size.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5, S6 Edge+

Samsung Galaxy Note 5, S6 Edge+

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is "confirmed" to sport 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. This would make the smartphone the company's first to feature 4GB of RAM. Notably, the Asus ZenFone 2 also comes with 4GB of RAM. Also, OnePlus 2 is confirmed to house the same amount and type of RAM.
Also mentioned is the inclusion of Exynos 7422 processor, which is said to be Samsung's first true single-chip solution (ePOP) with an integrated 64-bit octa-core CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and the Shanon 333 4G LTE modem. The report also cites company insiders to claim the Galaxy Note 5 will come without a microSD card slot, just like the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

The Galaxy S6 Edge+ is said to be the large-screen variant of the Galaxy S6 Edge, and could also be considered the dual-edge display version of the Galaxy Note 5. It is said to arrive in the same colour variants like the Note 5. The handset is said to be powered by the same Exynos 7420 processor instead of Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC, which was rumoured last month.
Another report by GSMArena shows the dimensions of the two devices via some image renders. The details come from case maker company ITSKINS. The renders suggest the Galaxy Note 5 to feature s Galaxy S6-like design as mentioned above. Also hinted is that the Galaxy Note 5 might lose its removable battery option, as with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. As per the case maker, the flagship phablet will measure 153.3x76.1x7.9mm, which indicates a 5.7-inch display. Also tipped was the lack of USB Type-C connectivity on the handset.

India's Digital Locker

India's Digital Locker

To access your digital locker, visit DIGILocker and you can sign up now for free with your Aadhaar details.

That's a huge number of documents to keep and manage, and the government also seems to have taken notice. As part of Digital India week on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched a digital locker service called DIGILocker, though the service was soft-launched sometime back.
So what exactly is DIGILocker? Very simply, it's a website where you can store your various government issued documents, using your Aadhaar card as your identification. While it hasn't been stated as such, to us, it also looks like a good way of bringing data from different government agencies together under the aegis of the Aadhaar card, potentially making the document more useful to people carrying it.
To sign up, you need only enter your Aadhaar number, and an SMS is set out to the mobile phone number you registered at the enrolment camp. This one-time-password is the only way to get inside your DIGILocker for the first time, but afterwards, you can set your own password or link the DIGILocker to your Google or Facebook login.
After you've signed up, you can upload your government documents to the DIGILocker - there's only 10MB of storage at present - but you can also save the Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) of government documents using DIGILocker.
The idea is that this should minimise the need for physical documents; if your birth and education certificates are online, and you apply for a passport, then the Passport Office could use your Aadhaar number to request the DIGILocker for your details, without needing you to carry a large file of documents for the application.

Apple Pay lands in the UK

Apple Pay lands in the UK

Apple Pay has finally arrived in the UK, but some of the banks Apple had announced as partners are conspicuous by their absence.
The service went live on Tuesday, about nine months after Apple first launched Apple Pay in the US. We'll have a hands-on with the app later today.
Apple during its developer conference in June said Apple Pay would arrive in the United Kingdom in July though it didn't give a precise date at that time. Jennifer Bailey, vice president of the Apple Pay business, said the service -- which allows users to pay for items in stores using their smartphones and Apple Watches or quickly purchase items in apps -- would be available at more than 250,000 locations in the UK.
HSBC and Lloyds were supposed to be included but at launch are not supported by the app. HSBC told us that HSBC and its online spin-off FirstDirect will be included later this month. The Lloyds Banking Group told us that Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland will be supported in the autumn.

Lumia 640 XL LTE

Lumia 640 XL LTE

Microsoft Devices' Lumia 640 XL LTE is the souped-up version of the company's 5-inch Lumia 640. The XL ups the screen size to 5.7-inches and adds 4G connectivity, while popping a significantly bigger 13-megapixel camera on the rear, a 5-megapixel one on the front and a 3,000mAh battery inside. Even better, it does all this while maintaining a respectably low price: just $240, £219 in the UK and AU$399 in Australia.
My colleague Andrew Hoyle was quite effusive about the smaller Lumia 640, calling it "everything you'd hope for from a budget phone." But, bearing in mind the XL has the exact same processor, storage and RAM as the smaller model, are these additions worth the extra cost?
A quick note: there are a couple of different variants of the Lumia 640 XL available, including a dual-SIM model and one without the LTE offering. The model reviewed here is a version with a single SIM slot and an LTE 4G modem.
In an ocean of black handsets, the Lumia 640 XL stands out like some sort of exotic fish. Yes, you can still get it in black or white, but the blue -- wait, make that "cyan" -- review unit that I had in the office was actually quite refreshing.

Even better, the casing on the 640 XL is a matte finish, unlike the gloss on its smaller sibling. I've never been a fan of a piano-finish as they seem designed purely to collect fingerprints, so the XL gets extra points just for that.
The 5.7-inch IPS screen on the XL might be bigger than the base 640, but it has the exact same resolution of 1,280x720 pixels. This means the XL actually has a lower pixel density than its smaller cousin -- 259ppi versus 294ppi. (For some more context, the 1,440x2,560-pixel Galaxy S6 has around 577 ppi.)
The 640 XL is running the same version of Windows Phone 8.1 as the 5-inch 640, with all the same benefits and disadvantages. It's also packing the exact same processor and memory, a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 and 1GB of RAM.
The XL improves on the 640 in both rear and front cameras. The front jumps from an underwhelming 0.9-megapixel to 5, which is going to keep you happy for both selfies and Skype calls.
But it's the 13-megapixel snapper on the rear -- complete with German-made Zeiss optics -- that's the most marked improvement. That's letting you take 4,128x3,096 resolution photos (far, far better than the screen can display) and 1080p Full-HD video -- also at a higher res than the screen can display.

Developers Can Now Price Their Paid iOS Apps as Low as Rs. 10

Developers Can Now Price Their Paid iOS Apps as Low as Rs. 10

Apple has announced new pricing tiers that will enable developers to price their paid apps as low as Rs. 10 for customers in India.
All prices in App Store are set against the US dollar (USD), and the lowest a developer can price an app - other than making it free of course - is $0.99. In markets outside the US, Apple has traditionally charged the local currency equivalent of the USD price, as calculated against a fixed (but periodically revised) exchange rate. The exact pricing in each market is shown to developers as a part of the Pricing Matrix available under iTunes Connect.
Apple has let developers charge higher or lower prices in select markets as part of its 'Alternate Tier' pricing. This week, Apple extended two low-price tiers - called Alternate Tier A and Alternate Tier B - to the App Store in India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and Turkey. Thanks to these new tiers, developers can continue to charge, say, $0.99 for an app in the US App Store but charge customers in India Rs. 10 (Alternate Tier A) or Rs. 30 (Alternate Tier B). The Alternate Tier pricing is also applicable for in-app purchases.
Apple notes that developers already using the Alternate Tier A and Alternate Tier B price tiers on the Chinese App Store will see prices for their apps in the above mentioned countries updated to reflect the new pricing structure. Other developers will need to opt in to the alternate pricing tiers to avail their benefit. The lowest price for a paid app in these regions now stands at 5 Peso in Mexico, 1 Yuan in China, 3000 Rupiah in Indonesia, Rs. 10 in India, 15 Rubles in Russia, 0.59 Lira in Turkey, and 3.99 Rand in South Africa.
